Pip Eastop – Hornplayer

baroque and classical period performance, contemporary, chamber music, symphonic, commercial sessions, jazz improvisation and free improvisation.

about me

I play horn professionally in London. I also play a bit of jazz trumpet I’ve only been learning it for 9 years so I’m still a bit of a beginner.

I started my professional career in 1976 as solo horn with the Philharmonic Orchestra of Antwerp, Belgium (now known as the Royal Flemish Philharmonic, or deFilharmonie). The following year I became principal horn of the London Sinfonietta.

In 1986 I left the London Sinfonietta, stopped playing horn and started teaching Alexander Technique. A year later I started playing horn again – freelancing, a bit of everything – and I’ve not looked back.

Currently my work seems to be a mixture of many kinds of tasty things: mostly recording music for films or playing as guest principal horn with, for example, The London Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra, The Philharmonia Orchestra, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, HallĂ© Orchestra. I am very proud to be principal horn with the wonderful London Chamber Orchestra (and I’m also Principal Trumpet with the Kensington Philharmonic Orchestra – though this is not a professional endeavour on my part).

I’m professor of horn at the Royal College of Music, London, and I am honoured to be a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music.

This website exists because I love to write about hornplaying, about teaching horn, and about learning to play jazz trumpet relatively late in life.
