2008

In the spring, I played first solo horn in Schumann’s Koncertstuck for four horns and orchestra. This was with the Philharmonia Orchestra at the Aldeburgh Festival, conducted by Oliver Knussen. The other soloists were: 2nd – Tim Jackson, 3rd – Cormac ó hAodáin, 4th – Carsten Williams.

During the summer I was playing principal horn in Glyndebourne’s productions of Carmen and Love And Other Demons

September – made a tour of South America with Halle Orchestra – as guest principal horn.

September – recording sessions in London for the film of the musical, “Nine”. Apparently this is something quite big – lots of stars involved etc…

Summer: Some work with my own band, the wonderful London Chamber Orchestra: concerts in St. Johns, Smith Square, London. Then a short trip to Italy followed by a week in Spain (Bilbao, Valencia and Madrid). We played Beethoven Piano Concertos with the incomparable Maria João Pires.

October 9th: A trumpet, horn, tenor flugel and piano improvisation concert in, St. James’, Piccadilly, central London with my friend, the pianist Gabriel Faja. This was the first public exposure of the PhatterBoy Eb Tenor Flugelhorn.

October – A week with The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. Concerts in Paris and Birmingham – Mendelssohn’s Elijah.

October – two concerts at the Festival Hall with London Philharmonic Orchestra, as guest principal horn. Stravinsky’s “The Fairy’s Kiss”, (fantastic horn parts), and Tchaikowsky’s opera, “Iolanta”. Vladimir Jurowski conducted both of these. Both were recorded, live, for the LPO’s own label.

Autumn: Some sessions for Boris Grebenshchikov and the Russian pop band, Aquarium. Great fund to work with these cool guys – I played horn, trumpet and flugelhorn. Very creative and rewarding.

November – German tour and concerts at Festival Hall, London, with Philharmonia, as guest principal horn. Tchaikowsky 5th Symphony, The Rite of Spring, Beethoven fiddle concerto.

December – A couple of weeks with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, guesting as principal horn. Festival Hall concert and a trip to Spain, I believe. Mahler Symphony 10 and Wagner Tristan and Isolde, Act 2

2009

January – A trip to Minneapolis with London Sinfonietta. Four concerts. Unbelievably cold – even for St. Paul!

January 24th – Royal Festival Hall, London Philharmonic Orchestra. Sinfonia Domestica, by Richard Strauss. Thanks to Sir Mark Elder, who was absolutely brilliant.

February 6th to 21st – Six concerts in India with S.C.O. – Scottish Chamber Orchestra. Thanks to SCO for a wonderful trip.

February 23rd – Richard Strauss’s 2nd Horn Concerto with Kensington Philharmonic Orchestra. Incidentally, I often play principal trumpet with this band!

March 7th – Richard Strauss’s 1st Horn Concerto with Surrey Mozart Players at the Yehudi Menuhin School.

Tour with SCO and Piotr Anderszewsky playing Mozart piano concertos (handhorn). Perth, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Bydgoszcz, Krakow, Budapest and Istanbul.

May – June – The Opera, Lulu, by Berg. Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. Guest principal horn.

July – August – The operas, l’Elisir d’Amour (Donizetti) and Tristan & Isolde (Wagner) at Glyndebourne with London Philharmonic Orchestra. Guest Principal Horn.

September – October: Concerts around Scotland with Scottish Chamber Orchestra and Scottish Ensemble.

November

Concerts in Scotland with Scottish Chamber Orchestra

A week with Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra (in Liverpool)

Two concerts of Haydn (nat.) and Schnittke (modern horns)  with LPO at Festival Hall.

Improvised opera at Leicester Square Theatre, with Impropera.

December:

5th Christmas Oratorio (on nats.) with Brandenburg Baroque Soloists, in Farnham.

10th and 13th Philharmonia Orchestra concerts at Royal Festival Hall – big Wagner night, then Hansel and Gretel and Beethoven 6th Symphony – with Sir Charles Mackerras.

13th Impropera – improvised opera (hilarious – try to come if you can!!!)

17th Concert at Mermaid Theatre with Guy Barker Big Band.

28th Trip to China with LPO. 6 concerts in 3 cities. Firebird, Dvorak 8 etc…

January:

17th to 28th recordings of Ariadne Auf Naxos and Bourgeoise Gentilhomme (R. Strauss) with SCO and Sir Charles Mackerras.

March:

Concerts with Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment (nat. horn) in Queen Elizabeth Hall and Royal Festival Hall (London) and Lincoln Centre (New York) – Beethoven Symphonies.
